What is Australian Apprenticeship Support Services

Australian Apprenticeship Support Services (AASS) is a Commonwealth Government program designed to support apprentices and trainees while they are undertaking their study program. Yilabara has partnered with BUSY At Work to deliver Indigenous Specialist AASS to ensure that First Nations apprentices and trainees are culturally supported to undertake and complete their training

What are Apprenticeships and Traineeships

Apprenticeships and traineeships combine formal study and paid on the job training leading to a nationally recognised qualification. Apprenticeships generally take between two to four years to complete, depending on the trade, while traineeships generally take 12 months to complete. Both enable you to work while studying and building the foundations for a successful career.

How we assist Apprentices, Trainees and Employers

Our goal is to make process of commencing an apprenticeship or a traineeship as easy as possible.

  • First Nations Apprentices and Trainees – our team will work alongside you, explaining the apprenticeship or traineeship pathway with you ensuring you have all the information you need to embark successfully upon your journey with your employer.
  • Employers – we can walk you through your entitlements as an employer of an apprentice or trainee including how to engage apprentices and trainees in your business and any support for which you may be eligible.

What support do we provide

Apprentices and Trainees

  • Commencing an apprenticeship or traineeship can be both exciting and scary at the same time. Yilabara provides the following support to all our First Nations Apprentices and Trainees.
  • Tailored Support Plan – we will develop this with you, including the support you may require to successfully complete your apprenticeship or traineeship.
  • Aboriginal Mentor – we will assign a dedicated mentor to you to help answer questions you may have or issues you may be experiencing during your apprenticeship or traineeship. Our support is confidential.
  • Contact Schedule – we will set up a series of check-ins with you. These may be in person or online and will be arranged at a time that fits in with your apprenticeship and traineeship commitments.
  • Cultural Support – all our Aboriginal mentors have walked your path and understand the challenges of work. No issue is too small, and we are simply a phone call away if you need our support.
  • Apprentice Financial Support – our Aboriginal mentors can guide you through the range of financial supports that you may be able to access, including:
    • Apprentice Training Support Payment
    • Australian Apprenticeship Support Loans (AASL)
    • New Energy Apprentice Support Payment
    • Living Away from Home Allowance
  • Travel and Accommodation Subsidy

Employers

  • We specialise in working with employers on their First Nations employment strategies. Our support ranges from designing Aboriginal Employment Strategies to Reconciliation Action Plans to end to end recruitment support. Employing apprentices and trainees can be confusing for those new to the area. Our approach is to simplify this for employers and includes the following support:
  • Apprenticeship Priority List – we can advise you if your apprenticeship role is listed under the Apprenticeship Priority List.
  • Incentives and Support – our mentors can step you through the incentives and supports available to you as the employer and how to access these.
  • Sourcing First Nations Candidates – we have a strong network throughout NSW and can work with you to fill your First Nations apprenticeships roles.
  • Help Desk – we are just a phone call away if you have questions about your apprentice or trainee. With our partner, Busy At Work we provide a complete wrap around service to set your business up for success
  • Aboriginal Cultural Capability Training Package – we deliver innovative training for all industries on Aboriginal Cultural Awareness, Aboriginal Cultural Safety and Aboriginal Engagement and Protocols. Click Here for more information.
